14 Chakma families reconvert to their ancestral faith after leaving Christianity

Agartala, October 26: Altogether, 14 families from the Chakma community of Pecharthal area in Tripura have reconverted to their ancestral faith after leaving Christianity. This was announced by Shanti Bikash Chakma, secretary of the Tripura Region Chakma Social Council, at a press conference in Agartala Town Hall on Thursday.

The press conference was held after the Chakma General Assembly, which was organized by the council to discuss the issues related to the Chakma culture and society. The assembly was attended by Chakma Samaj Pradhan Samajpati Debayan Chakma, Upa-Pradhan Samajpati Yogamaya Chakma, Upa-Pradhan Samajpati Nirmal Chakma, Senior Journalist Srota Ranjan Khisa and others.

Shanti Bikash Chakma alleged that 16 families from the Chakma community were converted to Christianity by using various tricks and inducements. He said that after realizing their mistake, 14 families decided to return to their original faith and renounce Christianity. He said that the council welcomed them back and performed the necessary rituals to restore their identity.

He also said that the Chakma culture is in danger today due to various external influences and threats. He appealed to the administration to take necessary steps to protect and preserve the Chakma culture and social system. He said that the council is working to create awareness and unity among the Chakma people and to promote their education and development.
