Agartala, 11th June 2024:  The Congress party, led by MLA Birjit Sinha, staged a significant protest at the Kailashahar police station today in response to the recent vandalism of a statue of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The demonstration saw participation from key Congress leaders, including District Congress President Md Badruzzaman, State Congress General Secretary Rudrendu Bhattacharya, and Congress leader Runu Miya.

The protest march commenced from the district Congress building and proceeded through various streets of the city before culminating at the Kailasahar police station. Demonstrators vociferously expressed their outrage and demanded justice for the desecration of the statue.

Upon reaching the police station, a delegation of five members, headed by District Congress President Md Badruzzaman, met with the Officer in Charge (OC) to demand the immediate arrest of those responsible for the vandalism.

Addressing the media outside the police station, MLA Birajit Sinha condemned the act and connected it to a series of similar incidents. He highlighted that on June 4, after the counting of Lok Sabha votes, the CPIM Chandipur region committee office was vandalized in Srirampur. Subsequently, on June 5, the bust of poet Himadri Nandan Dev was desecrated in Kazirgao, followed by the defacement of Rajiv Gandhi’s bust in Govindpur on June 8.

Sinha accused local leaders of the ruling party of orchestrating these attacks. He warned that the police’s failure to arrest the perpetrators would jeopardize the peace in Kailasahar, holding the police accountable for any ensuing unrest. He also recalled a previous incident in 2018, when the statue of late Deputy Chief Minister Baidyanath Majumder was vandalized, suggesting a pattern of such nocturnal attacks by cowards.
