Agartala, 20th September 2024: In light of the State Government’s initiatives, the operationalization of Kailashahar Airport is poised for a significant boost. An official letter indicates that discussions are underway to introduce new air routes under the UDAN scheme, linking Kailashahar with key destinations such as Kolkata and Agartala. Alliance Air and Flybig have been chosen to operate flights using 17 and 19-seater aircraft, respectively.
However, a major challenge remains: acquiring an additional 99 acres of land needed to extend the runway. This land is essential for expanding operations and accommodating larger aircraft in the future. The high cost of land has also raised concerns about budgetary constraints.
In a 2018 meeting chaired by Tripura’s Chief Minister, it was decided that operating larger 72-seater aircraft at the airport would be impractical due to runway limitations. Despite this, the state is moving forward with plans for smaller aircraft, which are expected to begin operations once the necessary approvals and land arrangements are in place.
The State Government is eager to commence flight operations with smaller aircraft to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic activity. Local authorities remain hopeful about overcoming the land acquisition challenges and starting operations soon.
Officials are optimistic that this development will boost tourism and transportation, aligning with Tripura’s commitment to improving aviation infrastructure and achieving the UDAN scheme’s goal of affordable air travel.
