Agartala, 24th September 2024: In a heart-wrenching plea, Ashish Kumar Bhowmik and his wife have sought Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha’s help in saving their only son, 14-year-old Kishan Bhowmik, who is battling a rare and severe viral infection known as Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE).
Kishan’s health problems began approximately six months ago when he first experienced issues with his eyes. Concerned for his well-being, his parents sought treatment at GB Hospital in Guwahati, where doctors could not identify the underlying cause of his symptoms. As his condition worsened, he was hospitalized again but without any clear diagnosis.
Desperate for answers, Ashish Kumar Bhowmik took Kishan to specialized medical facilities in Kolkata and Bangalore, where doctors ultimately diagnosed him with SSPE, a progressive neurological disorder triggered by a previous measles infection. This devastating condition has left Kishan unable to speak and struggling to walk.
Doctors informed the family that, as of now, there is no known cure for SSPE in India. However, they emphasized the importance of daily medication to manage Kishan’s symptoms and maintain his quality of life. Faced with mounting medical expenses and the heartbreaking realization of their son’s declining health, the Bhowmik family has exhausted their savings in the quest for treatment.
In a desperate appeal to the media, Ashish Kumar Bhowmik expressed his dismay, stating, “We had so many dreams for our only son, and now we are helpless. We have spent all our money trying to save him, but he continues to suffer.” He revealed that a doctor in Agartala had recently referred Kishan to a hospital in Bangalore for advanced treatment, but financial constraints have made it impossible for the family to proceed.
On Tuesday morning, the distraught parents made a public appeal for assistance, urging the Chief Minister to intervene and provide the necessary support to secure medical care for their son. They hope that their plea will reach the right ears and bring about the help they desperately need to give Kishan a fighting chance.
