Agartala, 28th September 2024:   Persistent accidents due to neglected road maintenance and lack of proper drainage have led to daily mishaps in Samarurpar village. In response, the youth of the village staged a road blockade demanding immediate reforms.

The protest took place in Ward No. 3 of Samarurpar Gram Panchayat, where the youth voiced their frustration over the long-standing neglect. “The road adjacent to the BSF camp has been in disrepair for a long time,” said one of the protesters. “Without proper drains, even a slight rain causes water to overflow onto the road, making it impassable.”

Despite repeated appeals to the local panchayat and public works department, no action has been taken. This led the youth to block the road at 10:30 am on Saturday demanding urgent repairs and the construction of paved drains.

The blockade drew a significant police and TSR force presence. A local ruling party leader, Chinputi, arrived at the scene and allegedly threatened the protesters in front of the police and media. “They started abusing us and demanded we lift the blockade,” reported one of the youths.

Police officers assured the protesters that they would discuss the matter with higher authorities. Following this assurance, the blockade was lifted after about an hour and a half. However, elderly villagers believe the protest was a desperate measure against the ruling party’s leadership.
