Agartala, 15th October 2024:   Tripura government has suspended internet services in North Tripura District and enforced Section 144 of the CrPC in Dharmanagar sub-division after reports of communal tension arose following allegations of a temple being vandalized.

In an official notification, Home Secretary P.K. Chakraborty stated that the decision to suspend internet services was made in response to rising tensions in parts of North Tripura. The order was issued under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and it prohibits all mobile SMS services, mobile internet/data services, and media transmissions for the next 72 hours starting from 5:00 PM on October 15 across the entire district.

Violating the notification will be punishable under Section 144 of the CrPC, along with the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017.

A separate notification issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dharmanagar, Sajal Debnath, implemented Section 144 CrPC from October 15 to October 17. This measure was taken following the recommendation of the Superintendent of Police (SP) of North Tripura due to ongoing communal tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities, which escalated into a serious law-and-order situation.

The prohibitory orders restrict public gatherings, but exemptions have been made for paramilitary forces, state police, government officials performing essential duties, and patients requiring urgent medical care. Educational institutions are allowed to hold classes during the day.

North Tripura SP Bhanupada Chakraborty addressed the situation, stating, “Rumors have been circulating about attacks on temples and mosques, leading to heightened communal tensions. However, we have deployed security forces immediately to control the situation. We urge the public not to believe in or spread rumors. We are actively investigating the situation and will take legal action against anyone responsible for inciting unrest.”

The authorities are urging residents to remain calm and avoid misinformation while security efforts continue to stabilize the region.
