Agartala, 19th January 2025:   In a shocking and gruesome incident, a wild elephant was found brutally killed in the dense forest of Tui Rupa Chhara in Pramod Nagar, under the jurisdiction of the Kalyanpur Forest Department of Khowai District.

The decomposed body of the elephant came to light earlier today, sparking widespread concern among locals and authorities alike.

Reports indicate that the elephant was shot twice in the head, and its body was mutilated by forest bandits. The culprits reportedly severed parts of the elephant’s head and hind leg, likely in an attempt to collect the animal’s valuable tusks. Forest Department officials, including Sub-division Forest Officer Gaurav R. Wagh, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

Dr. Keshab Debnath, a veterinarian from the Forest Department, revealed that the elephant was not only shot but also had about 400 to 500 kg of meat removed from its body. The tail and tusks, considered highly valuable, were also taken by the bandits. “The brutality of this act is heartbreaking,” Dr. Debnath said, expressing his concern over the increasing incidents of wildlife poaching in the region.

The incident has drawn comparisons to a similar case from 2014, when a wild elephant was also found mutilated in the dense forests of Uttar Maharanipur. That case remains unsolved, raising doubts about the effectiveness of wildlife protection efforts in the area.
