Agartala, 21st February 2025 : To commemorate International Mother Language Day, a special event was organized by the Sabroom Press Club in Tripura. The occasion saw tributes being paid to the martyrs of the language movement by several dignitaries, including Tripura Government Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, MLA Meilafru Mog, South District Chairman Deepak Datta, and former MLA Shankar Roy. The event was also graced by Sabroom Municipal Council Chairperson Rama Poddar De and Satcahan Panchayat Samiti Chairman Prabhas Lodh.
As the chief guest, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the significance and historical background of Language Day. He remarked, “The sacrifice made by those who laid down their lives for the Bengali language continues to inspire us. This day is not just for remembrance but also a call to awaken our sense of duty towards our language and culture.”
Other prominent figures present at the event also paid their respects to the language martyrs in their speeches. A memorial meeting and floral tribute were held at the Press Club premises, with participation from members of various social organizations, cultural workers, the general public, and students from Sabroom Higher Secondary School and Sabroom Girls’ School.
The event featured performances of dance and songs in honor of the language martyrs. Students commemorated the martyrs of the language movement by singing patriotic songs.
Praising the initiative, South District Chairman Deepak Datta said, “We must spread the spirit of the language movement among the new generation, so they become aware of their own language and culture.”
At the end of the event, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury visited the historic Deitieshwari Kali Temple in Sabroom. He offered his respects to the deity and received blessings, engaging in conversations with the temple priests. He also spent some time with the local residents in the temple premises.
It is noteworthy that International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21st worldwide, primarily in memory of the martyrs of the 1952 language movement. This day is observed with due respect across various parts of Tripura as well.
In different regions of Tripura, the day is marked with discussions, cultural programs, and processions in memory of the language martyrs. The day holds special significance through the deep reverence paid to Bengali culture and language.
The Sabroom Press Club’s initiative has been widely appreciated as a unique effort to honor the martyrs of the language movement. As evening fell, a cultural program was held at the Sabroom fairground, organized by the Sabroom Press Club.
