Agartala, 17th March 2025:   In the sweltering heat of the Kharif season, the residents of Poangbari block in South Tripura find themselves in the throes of an acute drinking water crisis. The lack of clean water has left the community in distress, with mounting frustration directed at what they perceive as administrative apathy.

The situation has sparked protests across the block, with locals accusing the authorities of failing to fulfill their promises. Women’s group voiced their anguish stating, “We are crying for water day after day, but the administration is completely silent.” Their words echo the sentiments of many who feel abandoned by the system.

The issue has also brought political promises under scrutiny. The ruling BJP government in Tripura had pledged to ensure drinking water for every household under the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission.’ Similarly, the Tipra Motha leadership, which has positioned itself as a champion of tribal rights, had assured development in the region. However, residents claim these commitments remain unfulfilled. “We have not seen any real change. The promises were just words,” lamented a local villager.

Repeated appeals to the block authorities and the drinking water department have reportedly gone unanswered. “We have informed the administration about our plight several times over the past few months, but no effective action has been taken,” said another resident. The inaction has only fueled the locals’ anger with the Women’s Group warning of escalated protests. “If our problem is not resolved, we will go on the path of a big movement,” they declared.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the administration regarding the crisis. Meanwhile, the residents of Poangbari are left grappling with uncertainty, wondering if their voices will ever be heard. “The situation will become fierier if urgent action is not taken,” warned a local leader.

The question remains: will the government and administration step up to address this pressing issue, or will the people of Poangbari continue to suffer in silence? The people of hills wait, hoping for a resolution to their plight.
