Agartala, 19th March 2025:   Aggrieved by massive losses under the BJP government, farmers in the state have taken to the streets demanding urgent action on irrigation projects. The All India Krishak Sabha organized a massive procession today pressing an 8-point demand including the immediate launch and repair of all irrigation projects. The rally began in front of Circuit House, traversed through various city roads before culminating in a deputation at the Water Resources Development Department.

Speaking to reporters here, All India Krishak Sabha state secretary Pabitra Kar lamented the dire state of irrigation infrastructure. “About 80 percent of the state’s irrigation facilities are non-functional due to the lack of repairs. This has resulted in extreme losses for farmers,” he stated, adding that despite repeated appeals, the government has not taken any steps to address the issue.

Kar further highlighted the devastating impact of recent floods on agriculture in Tripura. “Paddy, vegetables—everything has been destroyed. South Tripura, Gomti Tripura, and other districts have suffered immense damage to their irrigation systems due to the floods,” he said. He reiterated that the organization has put forth an 8-point demand, prioritizing farmers’ interests and urging immediate government intervention.

With mounting distress among farmers, the protest signals growing discontent and an urgent need for government action to revive the state’s struggling agricultural sector.
