Agartala, 20th March 2025:   Strengthening its commitment to sustainable development, the Tripura government has accelerated efforts to expand its Bio-village 2.0 initiative. With 24 new Bio-village projects currently in progress, the state has set a target of implementing six additional projects in the 2025-26 financial year.

Addressing a press conference, Tripura Science and Technology Minister Animesh Debbarma highlighted the growing interest from external organizations in the state’s sustainability efforts. A Pune-based private entity has already shown keen interest in participating in the Bio-village 2.0 initiative and has surveyed some of the existing projects.

“Our objective is to set up five to ten Bio-villages in each block of the state,” Debbarma stated, emphasizing the government’s long-term vision of integrating sustainable technology into rural development.  In a significant achievement, the Biotechnology Department of Tripura has been selected for the prestigious *National Level Skoch Award-2025* for its innovative *College Biotech Club project*. The award will be presented at a ceremony at the Habitat Centre in New Delhi on March 29.

“The Skoch Award recognizes outstanding contributions in good governance, environmental protection, and technology innovation. This year, over 400 project applications from 27 states competed for the honor. After a rigorous selection process, our College Biotech Club project was chosen among the best,” Debbarma said.

Since its inception, the College Biotech Club initiative has been implemented in *17 degree colleges* across Tripura. The government now plans to establish *four more clubs in 2025-26, with an expanded scope to include **medical, veterinary, agricultural, and fisheries colleges. Additionally, the financial grant for each club has been raised to **Rs 2.5 lakh*, enabling greater research and development opportunities.  “With this expansion, we aim to develop new and innovative biotechnologies that will contribute to Tripura’s growth,” the Minister added.

The state’s continued push for biotechnology and sustainability not only enhances environmental protection but also positions Tripura as a leader in grassroots innovation.
