Agartala, 21st March 2025: The Badarpur (Assam)–Agartala railway section has been fully electrified, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha.
Responding to a query on connectivity between Delhi and Tripura, Vaishnaw highlighted that Tripura gained broad gauge connectivity with the rest of India following the completion of the Lumding–Silchar–Badarpur–Agartala gauge conversion project in 2016. This development significantly enhanced rail connectivity across the state.
Regarding train connectivity to the national capital, the Minister stated that Agartala is directly linked to Delhi via two pairs of trains. Additionally, the city has seven pairs of regular trains to Guwahati, from where passengers can access seven more train services to the Delhi region.
Addressing future improvements, he mentioned that electrification of the entire Guwahati–Badarpur–Agartala route is in progress. While the Badarpur–Agartala section is already electrified, work on the Guwahati–Badarpur stretch is advancing swiftly. Once completed, this project will enable the introduction of more trains and enhance passenger services to and from Tripura.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening railway infrastructure in the Northeast, focusing on better connectivity and improved travel experiences for Tripura and neighboring states.
“With initiatives like electrification, station redevelopment, and new train services, we are modernizing the railway network to ensure efficient, comfortable, and accessible travel. These developments will not only ease passenger movement but also drive economic growth, trade, and tourism in the region,” he added.
