American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga etched her name into the annals of music history, commanding an unprecedented audience of approximately 2.5 million at a free concert on Copacabana Beach, setting a new world record for the highest-attended female artist.
She surpassed Madonna’s previous milestone of 1.6 million.
The concert, Gaga’s first in Brazil in over a decade, featured an electrifying list of songs drawn from her vast catalogue of hits. From the atmospheric opening with ‘Bloody Mary’ to the soaring anthems ‘Poker Face’, ‘Paparazzi’ and ‘Shallow’, the pop icon delivered a career-spanning performance that became as much a celebration as a cultural landmark, according to a report by PEOPLE.
After the concert, the 39-year-old singer shared her feelings on Instagram. “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you.”
Gaga appeared to acknowledge the historic moment during her concert as well, telling the Copacabana Beach crowd, “Tonight, we’re making history,” as per Variety. “Thank you for making history with me,” she added to fans. “The people of Brazil are the reason why I can shine.”
Despite the jubilant celebration, Brazilian authorities revealed a grave threat loomed over the concert. Brazilian police confirmed they intercepted a planned bomb attack targeting the event, arresting a suspect connected to a hate group known for propagating hate speech against children and the LGBTQ+ community.
