Agartala, 2nd July 2025: Leader of the Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, on Wednesday wrote to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, urging immediate action to curb the rising trend of political violence and hooliganism in the state. In his letter, Chaudhury, who is also the CPIM state secretary, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law-and-order situation and called for urgent measures to restore peace and democratic normalcy.
While acknowledging that some control was brought over the state’s atmosphere of terror since the BJP-led government assumed power in March 2018, Chaudhury noted that opposition parties have only been able to function within a limited and restricted environment. He, however, alleged that in the recent past—particularly following the Chief Minister’s public remarks about giving the police a “free hand”—incidents of violence have seen a sharp spike.
“It is extremely concerning and painful to witness that these acts of vandalism and attacks—posing serious threats to lives and property—are now being carried out in broad daylight, often in the presence of law enforcement personnel,” the letter states. “This stands in stark contradiction to your government’s much-publicised promise of ‘Sushasan’ (good governance).”
Chaudhury questioned the need for reiterating that the police have been given a ‘free hand’, pointing out that law enforcement is inherently empowered to act impartially and independently as per the Constitution. Despite such assurances, he claimed that ground realities reflect a worrying level of police inaction and indulgence, which is emboldening perpetrators and creating a climate of fear and suppression.
The CPIM leader also cited several incidents between June 17 and June 30, during which party workers, leaders, and offices allegedly came under attack.
“Given the gravity of the situation, I am compelled to seek your personal attention and intervention to take all necessary steps to stop this sudden surge in political and criminal violence,” Chaudhury wrote. “Only then can peace, law and order, and a democratic environment be restored in Tripura, as envisioned by the Constitution of India.”
