Agartala, 2nd July 2025: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag on Wednesday highlighted a concerning trend in the state—road traffic fatalities continue to outnumber murder cases, with over-speeding being the leading cause of accidents.
Speaking at an event held at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala, where 16 ambulances were distributed and the Vehicle Location Tracking and Monitoring System was virtually inaugurated, the DGP stressed that road safety remains a major challenge.
“On average, one person dies every 3.5 minutes in road accidents across India. In Tripura, two people died every three days last year. This year, the situation has slightly improved, with two deaths being reported every four days,” said Anurag. “Due to sustained road safety efforts, Tripura is now performing better than the national average.”
He informed that the state police, in collaboration with traffic units and other departments, has adopted the “4E” strategy—Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency Services—to systematically address road safety concerns.
Sharing data on the progress, the DGP said road traffic accident (RTA) fatalities declined by 13% in 2023 compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2024, accident-related deaths have dropped by 30%, while overall road accidents have decreased by 10%.
“Over-speeding remains the primary cause of accidents. While it accounts for 71% of road accidents nationally, in Tripura, the figure is as high as 90%. Other factors include drunk driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and violation of traffic norms,” he said.
Anurag also emphasized the critical role of public awareness and cooperation in reducing road mishaps. He noted with concern that 66% of accident victims fall in the 18–45 age group.
“last year Tripura recorded 226 deaths due to road accidents, while 116 people were murdered—underscoring how accidental deaths far exceed those from violent crimes,” the DGP pointed out.
