Agartala, January 31: In a major drug bust, the police seized 275 kg of dry ganja worth about Rs 25 lakh from a lorry at Churaibari in Bazaricherra on Wednesday afternoon. The police also arrested the driver and the co-driver of the vehicle, identified as Dwipkumar Hajong and Rajiv Kalita, both residents of Bakko in Assam.
According to Pranab Milli, the gate in-charge of Churaibari watch post, the police had received a tip-off about the illegal consignment and intercepted the six-wheeler truck with registration number AS01QC-8165 when it reached the check post. Upon searching the vehicle, the police found 45 packets of ganja hidden in various compartments of the car.
The police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the arrested duo and launched an investigation to trace the source and destination of the drug haul. It is reported that the car belonged to Tripura state and had crossed about 20 police checkpoints before entering Assam. This has raised questions about the role and efficiency of the Tripura police in curbing the drug menace.
