Agartala, 10th February 2025 : Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today called upon students and the general public to actively participate in the fight against drug addiction, emphasizing the need for a drug-free society.
Speaking at Jagriti 2025, an Inter-College Quiz Competition held at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, Dr. Saha underscored the importance of such initiatives in fostering awareness on critical social issues.
“Quiz competitions like these are highly relevant today. We are losing valuable human resources to road accidents, not just in Tripura but across the country. Awareness is essential for consumer protection as well. We have initiated the Nesha Mukt Tripura (Drug-Free Tripura) campaign, and while Tripura Police and other agencies are striving towards this goal, students—the future of our country—must also play an active role. Generating awareness is crucial, as it encourages public participation and strengthens the movement,” said Dr. Saha.
He stressed that informed students could greatly benefit the state government’s efforts in consumer protection and road safety.
“Our students are excelling both nationally and internationally. Recently, a student from Belonia, Tripura, had the opportunity to engage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Pariksha Pe Charcha. He confidently articulated his thoughts before the PM, making us all proud. Tripura’s students are excelling in multiple fields. To sustain this progress, society must work together to identify and report drug peddlers. A few decades ago, the education sector in Tripura faced immense challenges, with incidents of crude bomb attacks during exams. Though the situation has improved significantly, drugs have emerged as a new threat. We must unite to combat this menace,” he asserted.
Dr. Saha also spoke about consumer rights and safety measures that the public should adopt.
“Many road accidents occur due to improper helmet use, leading to fatal injuries. Youngsters often neglect safety measures, such as wearing helmets correctly while riding bikes. Even pillion riders ignore this crucial precaution. Although Tripura records fewer accidents than other states, we must take necessary steps to reduce risks. People should avoid overspeeding, driving under the influence, and using mobile phones while driving. Additionally, we are setting up trauma centers across the state to enhance emergency response,” he added.
