Agartala, 10th February 2025 :   MP Biplab Kumar Deb today raised a pressing demand for the urgent repair of an 11-kilometer stretch of the Assam-Agartala (NH-8) National Highway from Churaibari to Shanicherra. This segment of the highway, which serves as a critical gateway to the Northeast of India, has fallen into a state of severe disrepair.

Speaking in Parliament, MP Biplab Kumar Deb emphasized the significance of the Assam-Agartala National Highway, stating, “The Assam-Agartala (NH-8) National Highway is working as the gateway to the Northeast of India. This project carries the thrust of the BJP government’s Act East Policy. Moreover, the Assam-Agartala National Highway connects Tripura with various states. But the 11-km stretch from Churaibari to Shanichhara is in a dilapidated condition.”

He further elaborated on the dire consequences of the road’s poor condition, highlighting the increased risk of traffic accidents and transportation difficulties. “Due to the remote condition of some parts of the Assam-Agartala National Highway, there are frequent traffic accidents. Moreover, there is also the issue of transportation difficulties,” Deb added.

The MP also pointed out the challenges posed by heavy rains in Tripura, which exacerbate the situation due to the lack of an adequate drainage system on the highway. “Due to heavy rains in Tripura, the National Highway gets flooded due to the lack of drainage system on the National Highway. As a result, the local people of the surrounding areas face difficulties in traveling,” Deb explained.

In light of these issues, MP Biplab Kumar Deb urged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to prioritize finding a permanent solution. “I draw the attention of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in Parliament for a permanent solution on priority,” he stated.

To address the problem urgently, Deb requested the constitution of a committee by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). “I requested Minister Nitin Gadkari to constitute a committee of NHIDCL to resolve the problem urgently,” Deb concluded.
