Agartala, 23rd September 2024:   The Tripura Pradesh Congress staged a significant rally on Monday, voicing concerns over perceived lawlessness and the Tripura Police’s alleged bias. Party leaders demanded the restoration of law and order, the protection of democracy, and adherence to the Constitution.

The protest was spearheaded by Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Asish Kumar Saha, alongside MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Gopal Chandra Roy, and former party president Pijush Kanti Biswas. Following the rally, a demonstration was held in front of the Police Headquarters in Agartala.

Speaking to the media, Saha emphasized that the Congress rally was in response to rampant violence, particularly against women, and increasing attacks on opposition party members. “The BJP has turned elections into a mockery, with the Tripura Police complicit in these actions. We demand an immediate restoration of law and order, as well as a commitment to democracy and constitutional values,” he stated.

Later, a delegation from the Congress party met with Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan, submitting a memorandum outlining their concerns. Saha highlighted the pervasive lawlessness in the state, citing numerous incidents of violence against women and intimidation during recent Panchayat elections, which he claimed hindered opposition participation.

“The current government has fostered an atmosphere of fear, eroding public trust in both the administration and the police. We reiterated our call for the DGP to ensure free and fair elections, a promise that remains unfulfilled,” Saha added.

During the meeting, the delegation reminded Ranjan of his unfulfilled commitments, pointing out the rising incidents of gang violence, murder, and theft. “It appears that the police are misclassifying murders as unnatural deaths to shield BJP-affiliated perpetrators. If the police do not perform their duties, we will escalate our protests across the state,” Saha warned.
