Agartala, 10th August 2024:   The CPIM has once again raised concerns over the safety of its candidates, following an alleged attack on Liton Mia, a CPIM candidate for Ward No. 1 of Srimantapur Gram Panchayat under Kathalia block in Sonamura sub-division. The incident has prompted the party to demand enhanced security measures for polling agents and others on the day of the election results announcement.

In a press conference held at the CPIM sub-divisional office on Saturday, an injured Liton Mia detailed the attack, which he claims was orchestrated by ruling party miscreants. “The ruling party cannot accept their imminent defeat in the panchayat elections, which is why they resorted to violence,” Mia stated. He further explained that the attack occurred on Friday as he and his brother were returning home from Friday prayers at the mosque. “We were attacked at the mosque gate. My family members, who rushed to our aid upon hearing our screams, were also injured,” Mia added.

According to Mia, the attackers fled the scene when local residents gathered. The injured were subsequently taken to Sonamura Hospital for treatment. A case has been filed at Sonamura police station against seven individuals, including BJP candidate Maman Maishan, booth president Sadek Maishan, Juli Maishan, BJP candidate Feroz Maishan, Delwar Hossain, Khalil Miah, and Manzil Haque. “The attackers were armed with sharp weapons and pistols,” Mia alleged.

Shyamal Chakraborty, the MLA for the 22-Sonamura assembly constituency also spoke at the press conference. He highlighted incidents of violence in various panchayats within the Kathalia Block area, particularly Bhabanipur panchayat. “Although the election was termed peaceful, the reality was different. Despite the fear, people participated in the polls,” Chakraborty said. He expressed concerns about the fairness of the upcoming vote counting process and demanded that the Election Commission ensure proper counting and security for opposition party representatives.

Other CPIM leaders were also present at the press conference, echoing the call for increased security and transparency in the election process.
