Agartala, 22nd September 2025:   In a troubling development from Kamalasagar constituency, residents and local traders have expressed deep frustration over the repeated collapse of newly constructed roadside drain walls, citing extremely poor construction quality. The incident occurred along the stretch from Madhupur Hospital Chowmuhani to Madhupur School Chowmuhani, adjacent to the residence of the local MLA.

According to reports, the drain wall collapsed twice within a week each time following light rainfall. While the public tolerated the first collapse, the second incident triggered widespread anger. On Monday morning, pedestrians and market vendors halted all ongoing drain construction work, demanding accountability and higher standards.

The road project, which spans approximately 12.5 kilometers from Kamalasagar Kasba Temple, was allocated over ₹33 crore. Plans included widening the road on both sides, installing high-quality drainage systems to prevent waterlogging, expanding local markets, constructing a two-lane road from Kamalasagar Botgach to the temple, and installing street lighting throughout the stretch.

However, residents allege that none of these promises have been fulfilled. The roadwork, they claim, has been superficial at best, with the current drain construction being of “extremely poor quality.” Despite assurances from the site manager that the second round of construction would be improved, the wall collapsed again after light showers just four days later.

The contractor overseeing the project, Debashish Das, has come under intense criticism for allegedly compromising on quality across the entire roadwork. The fact that the drain wall collapsed twice in front of the MLA’s residence has raised serious questions about the integrity of the entire project.

Local citizens and business owners have now issued a stern warning: unless the work is carried out to acceptable standards, they will escalate their protest into a larger movement. The situation remains tense, with construction halted and public trust eroding rapidly.

The repeated failures have sparked a broader conversation among residents about government accountability and infrastructure standards. As the roadwork nears completion, the spotlight is now firmly on the remaining drainage work and whether it will meet the expectations of a frustrated community.
