Agartala, 30th May 2025: Continuous heavy rainfall since yesterday has caused widespread damage across Tripura, leaving 93 houses damaged and forcing 207 people to take shelter in four relief camps set up across the state.
According to a report from the State Emergency Operation Centre, the West District has been the worst hit. In Jirania Sub-division alone, 9 houses were severely damaged and 32 partially damaged. Mohanpur Sub-division reported 17 houses severely and 19 houses partially damaged.
In the South District’s Belonia Sub-division, 11 houses were reported severely damaged, while in North District’s Panisagar area, five houses suffered partial damage.
Three relief camps have been set up in the Sadar Sub-division of West District, providing shelter to 165 individuals from 46 families. An additional camp has been opened in Khowai District, where 42 people from 13 families have taken refuge. The report also noted that the torrential rain uprooted several trees, causing road blockades. These were promptly cleared by personnel from the Tripura State Rifles and local volunteers.
Major rivers across the state—including the Howrah, Gomati, Muhuri, Manu, and Bijoy—are now flowing above danger or warning levels, heightening the risk of floods.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for North and Unakoti districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) at several places, with isolated areas likely to receive extremely heavy showers exceeding 20 cm. “Most parts of Tripura received heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours,” the report stated. “Very heavy rain was recorded in Sepahijala District, while North, West, Khowai, Unakoti, South, and Gomati Districts received heavy showers. Moderate rainfall was reported from Dhalai District.” The IMD also forecast squally winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, in several areas of the state.
