Agartala, 27th February 2025:   A housewife named Tania Nama has been accused of being burned to death over dowry demands. Tania was reportedly subjected to prolonged physical and mental torture by her husband and mother-in-law.

Speaking to reporters here, Tania’s father Shanti Nama said that his daughter had been tortured for dowry since her marriage. He alleged that Tania’s mother-in-law had beaten her multiple times and pressured her for dowry money. Although the matter was initially resolved through the panchayat, the torture continued.

It is reported that Tania was set on fire by her alcoholic husband and mother-in-law in the afternoon of February 21 last. She was taken to GB Hospital in a critical condition. The night before her death, Tania’s father received a call from his son-in-law Krishna Debnath informing him of the incident. Unfortunately, Tania succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Following Tania’s death, her father has demanded justice. He has called for a proper trial of the incident and punishment for the accused to prevent such dowry-related torture in the future.

In response to the incident, the CPIML has submitted a deputation to the East Agartala Police Station highlighting the increasing cases of dowry-related torture on housewives in different parts of the state. They emphasized the urgent need for appropriate measures to address this issue.
