Agartala, October 31. A housewife named Deepa Das has accused her mother-in-law of trying to burn her alive with a lamp on the night of Lakshmi Puja. Deepa Das is currently undergoing treatment at GB Hospital for burns on her body.

She alleged that her mother-in-law, Jamuna Das, attempted to kill her by setting fire to her cotton saree with a lamp. She said that she managed to put out the fire with her presence of mind, but suffered injuries in the process.

Deepa Das also claimed that her husband Sushanta Das was not at home at the time of the incident, but came later and locked her inside the house. She said that she and her daughter were tortured by her husband and mother-in-law ever since they eloped and got married in March this year.

She said that they abused her physically every day and did not allow her to contact her parents. She said that even after the fire incident, she was left locked in the house for two days, until her parents came to rescue her and took her to GB Hospital.

Deepa Das said that her husband’s house is at Tota Bari area under Radha Kishorepur police station in Udaipur sub-division. She demanded strict punishment for the accused in-laws.

However, Jamuna Das denied the allegations and said that she did not try to burn Deepa Das. She said that on the day of Lakshmi Puja, she was working in the kitchen when she heard Deepa Das screaming and saw her on fire in the living room. She said that she immediately extinguished the fire and saved Deepa Das. She said that she did not know how the fire started and suggested that it might have been an accident.

The police are investigating the case and have not made any arrests so far. The condition of Deepa Das is said to be critical.
