Agartala, 13th April 2026: Acting on a tip-off, Kailashahar Police achieved a significant breakthrough on Monday afternoon by intercepting a luxury vehicle carrying a large quantity of Burmese cigarettes. Two young men, including the driver, were arrested in connection with the incident.
According to police sources, a team led by Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar of Kailashahar Police Station, along with TSR personnel, set up a trap in the Saiphon area of the city based on confidential intelligence. Soon after, a luxury Bolero vehicle bearing registration number TR02M0401 arrived at the location and was stopped for inspection.
During the search, police recovered a substantial quantity of Burmese cigarettes cleverly concealed inside the vehicle. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is around ₹3 lakh, officials said.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rakesh Bhowmik and Tarif Sarkar, both residents of the Pecharthal area. They are currently being interrogated as part of an ongoing investigation.
OC Tapas Malakar stated that attempts to smuggle Burmese cigarettes through Pecharthal, Panisagar, and Kumarghat via Kailashahar towards Bangladesh had been under surveillance for some time. He added that recent operations have already led to multiple successes in curbing such smuggling activities.
The seized vehicle has been taken into police custody, and further investigation is underway.
