Agartala, 18th March 2026: The issue of regularizing Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers was strongly raised in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, with leaders from both the ruling and opposition sides pressing the government to take immediate steps.
Paul Dangshu highlighted that many SSA teachers have been serving for over two decades and are now fully qualified under the Right to Education norms. He emphasized that despite fulfilling all eligibility requirements—including completing D.El.Ed training—these teachers continue to work without regular status or job security. He also noted that they handle responsibilities similar to permanent staff, such as election duties, mid-day meal supervision, and school administration.
Dangshu urged the state to withdraw the Special Leave Petition (SLP) currently pending before the Supreme Court of India. According to him, doing so could ease the financial burden on the state, as the Centre would bear a significant portion of the teachers’ salaries.
Raising humanitarian concerns, he pointed out that over 200 SSA teachers have died while in service, with their families receiving no pension or support under “die-in-harness” provisions. He called for fair pay structures and long-term financial security not only for SSA teachers but also for other contractual educators.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury echoed similar sentiments, reminding the House that regularization of such jobs had been a key electoral promise. He added that courts have already ruled in favor of the teachers and cited examples from other states like Assam, where SSA teachers have received benefits. He stressed that the state government could act if it shows political will.
Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that the matter is currently under judicial consideration in the Supreme Court. While acknowledging the issue, he said the government would consult the Law Department before taking any further steps.
