Agartala, 28th August 2026 : Tripura Chief Minister and Home Minister Dr. Manik Saha has warned that strict action will be taken against any police personnel found involved in the illegal drug trade, reiterating the state government’s “zero tolerance” policy towards narcotics.
Speaking in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday, Dr. Saha said the conviction rate in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act had reached *14.7% till July 2026*.
The Chief Minister was responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, who expressed concern over the growing drug menace and questioned the government about action taken against police personnel allegedly involved in narcotics-related activities.
Roy asked how many police personnel had been detained, arrested or chargesheeted for alleged involvement in the drug trade and whether FIRs had been registered against them.
In his response, Dr. Saha said the government is taking a multi-agency approach to combat drug trafficking, involving the state police, BSF and other enforcement agencies. He also highlighted awareness programmes aimed at preventing drug abuse among young people.
According to the Chief Minister, law enforcement agencies have arrested several individuals in NDPS cases, including alleged drug traffickers from outside the state. He said synthetic drugs entering Tripura from other states remain a matter of concern.
Dr. Saha also stressed the importance of strengthening prosecution in narcotics cases. He said Public Prosecutors and Assistant Public Prosecutors have been holding discussions with police officials to ensure better investigation and improve conviction rates.
The Chief Minister said the government is targeting both drug users and suppliers while also paying attention to minors who may be vulnerable to substance abuse.
Addressing concerns over police involvement in the drug trade, Dr. Saha made it clear that law enforcement personnel would not be given any special protection.
“We have taken action against police personnel who were found involved in the drug trade. There will be no compromise,” the Chief Minister said, adding that action would be taken against anyone found violating the law, irrespective of their position. Dr. Saha maintained that the government is continuing its efforts to curb drug trafficking and protect the younger generation from the growing threat of narcotics
