Agartala, 18th May 2025: The Gomati District Hospital inaugurated on June 19, 2012 with much enthusiasm has been plagued by irregular services and deteriorating conditions for years. Despite repeated directives from the state’s Chief Minister, local ministers and bureaucrats, little has changed to ensure smooth hospital operations.
Patients at the hospital face numerous hardships, including frequent electricity outages, lack of drinking water, and unusable toilets. In addition, reports suggest that doctors are sometimes unavailable at night, with medical rounds taking place as late as 1 am.
The facility’s dysfunction was evident yet again last night, when light rain led to a power outage lasting several hours. The hospital’s generator operator was untraceable, leaving critical patients in the ICU vulnerable. Tragically, as reported, a patient named Dulal Majumdar died due to service disruptions.
Further adding to patient woes, the hospital’s CT scan machine was nonfunctional yesterday and today forcing patients to travel long distances with advance bookings. On-duty doctor stated, “This issue is beyond our control. The department responsible for CT scans is handling the matter.” He added that patients with serious conditions are being referred to Agartala for treatment.
However, the malfunction left several patients stranded, with some returning home without receiving scans despite prior appointments.
Concerns have also been raised over the ICU’s functioning, with complaints of negligence linked to a staff member named Sister Pradeep. Families have expressed frustration over the lack of regular and adequate care, describing the hospital environment as chaotic and mismanaged.
The hospital’s Superintendent has been widely criticized for failing to address mounting issues. Reports indicate that the government has initiated steps for his removal, but he continues to hold his position for reasons unknown.
Despite the recent CT scan machine breakdown and the prolonged power outage, the Superintendent was reportedly absent from the hospital. Patients, meanwhile, are demanding urgent intervention from the Chief Minister, calling for immediate steps to ensure regular hospital services and improve accountability.
