Agartala, 26th November 2024: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the founder of Tipra Motha, has strongly opposed the Tripura government’s alleged plan to establish a five-star hotel at the historic Pushpabanta Palace. In a video message shared on Tuesday, Pradyot called on the government to rethink its decision, warning that protests would follow if the project proceeds.
The Pushpabanta Palace, also known as the old Raj Bhawan, was handed over to the Government of India in 1949 by Rajmata Kanchan Prabha Devi, under specific terms and conditions, to be used as the Governor’s House. Pradyot recalled that the previous government, led by the BJP and IPFT, had intended to turn the site into a public library in honor of the Maharaja, showcasing the culture and traditions of Tripura’s indigenous people. However, Pradyot claimed that without consulting the people or considering their sentiments, the government is now planning to build a five-star hotel on the site.
“I am deeply concerned that the remaining traces of Tripura’s history, especially related to our Maharaja, are being overlooked for the sake of profit,” Pradyot stated. He expressed his opposition to the proposal and urged the state government to reconsider. While he emphasized his support for development and tourism, he stressed that such projects should be placed in areas other than historical sites.
“If necessary, I am willing to provide land for such ventures, but I will not allow this to happen at our historical landmarks. This is unacceptable, and I will not stand for it,” he declared, vowing to take to the streets if the government moves forward with the plan.
