Agartala, 26th September 2024: In a powerful address at a Mega Solidarity Rally, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the royal scion and founder of Tipra Motha, called for immediate intervention from the Indian government regarding the persecution of minority communities in Bangladesh. His remarks sparked discussions about regional dynamics and India’s historical role in the formation of Bangladesh.

Debbarma, emphasizing his connection to the Maharaja’s lineage, lamented the attacks on minority groups in Bangladesh, noting the destruction of temples and churches, and the violence against individuals. “Our culture in Tripura, which once embraced a diversity of beliefs, is under threat as our people in Bangladesh face increasing persecution,” he stated. He recalled the historical significance of Tripura’s rulers in fostering an inclusive society, mentioning how temples, mosques, and churches coexisted harmoniously in the region.

The leader highlighted a stark contrast between Tripura’s rich cultural heritage and the growing intolerance reported in Bangladesh. “The tradition of Tripura is one of unity and respect for all faiths. Yet, we witness a troubling disregard for this ethos across the border,” he said, suggesting that this shift in Bangladesh’s attitude calls for a united response from Indian citizens, regardless of religious affiliation.

Debbarma asserted that Bangladesh, which emerged from the division of Pakistan due to India’s support, now seems to foster anti-India sentiments. He warned against the dangers of such rhetoric, particularly regarding territorial claims over Northeast India and Tripura. “It is crucial for us to stand together and demand accountability from our government, ensuring the safety of our fellow citizens and those in neighboring countries,” he urged.

He also reflected on the historical friendship between India and Bangladesh, noting that the current leadership under Sheikh Hasina lacks the same rapport with India as her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had. Debbarma concluded by emphasizing that India has the capacity to reshape its borders if the situation for minorities in Bangladesh does not improve, invoking the legacies of Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in calling for justice and protection for vulnerable communities.

This rally not only highlighted the pressing issues faced by minorities in Bangladesh but also underscored the historical ties and responsibilities India holds towards its neighboring country.
