Agartala, 5th September 2024: A wave of student protests erupted at Tripura Central University on Wednesday afternoon, as first-semester students, who failed their exams, blocked the national highway. The demonstration quickly gained momentum, with students from various universities joining the cause, demanding that all failing students be passed.
By Thursday, the protest had expanded to include students from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University and Bir Bikram Memorial College. They blocked the entrance to MBB University, insisting that they be allowed to progress to the second semester. The students argued that after completing their first-semester exams, they had already been admitted to the second semester, with exams scheduled to begin on September 19.
The controversy intensified when MBB University released the first-semester results, revealing that nearly 80 percent of students from the two colleges had failed. The protesting students demanded that their grievances be addressed and that they be given the opportunity to sit for the second-semester exams. They vowed to continue their movement until their demands was met.
Attempts to meet with the university vice-chancellor were reportedly denied, further fueling the students’ frustration. They questioned the delayed release of the results and argued that such a high failure rate was unacceptable. Police from the College Tila outpost arrived at the scene but were unable to control the situation. Subsequently, university officials engaged in discussions with the students to address their concerns.
