Agartala, 6th September 2024:  Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday that the Jal Jeevan Mission project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2025, with 243 innovative projects underway to provide drinking water.

Dr. Saha, who also oversees the Drinking Water & Sanitation Department, stated that since the Central Government announced the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ project on August 15, 2019, the State Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has been working in mission mode to ensure regular drinking water supply through pipelines to every rural household, including those in hilly areas.

“The total number of households in rural areas, including hilly regions of the state, is 7,50,227, out of which 6,23,632 households have piped water connections as of September 3, 2024—around 83.13%,” he said.

He further explained that to provide purified drinking water to people living in the hilly areas of the state, the department is supplying water through various sources, such as deep tube wells, short bore deep tube wells, water treatment plants, and innovative projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

“Innovative projects focusing on water sourced from streams, canals, and reservoirs have been developed, with more projects underway in hilly areas that face challenges due to scattered habitations and inadequate aquifers. So far, 432 innovative projects are operational in the state, and 243 more are in progress. By March 31, 2025, the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ project is expected to provide drinking water to every rural household, including those in the hilly areas, through pipelines. Currently, most of the hilly areas are part of TTAADC village councils, which have a total of 3,26,726 households, out of which 2,59,458 households (79.41%) have been provided with drinking water connections,” he added.
