Agartala, 2nd December 2025 :  Passengers traveling to and from Agartala Airport have raised strong protests against a section of auto-rickshaw drivers accused of charging exorbitant fares. Reports suggest that some drivers are demanding double or even triple the usual rates from commuters heading to different parts of the city.

According to complaints, a group of local auto drivers has also been accused of harassing other auto and e-rickshaw operators waiting outside the airport. These drivers are allegedly preventing others from picking up passengers, leaving travelers with little choice but to pay inflated fares. Without hiring a reserved auto, reaching destinations has become increasingly difficult, passengers claim.

Many air travelers, seeking cheaper options, attempt to hire autos or e-rickshaws from the roadside outside the airport. However, they reportedly face similar obstacles there as well. Allegations have surfaced that certain drivers are blocking others from collecting passengers, even disrupting rides booked through mobile applications. Such incidents are said to occur almost daily, often leading to heated confrontations.

Complaints of misbehavior towards passengers have also grown more serious in recent weeks. Observers allege that these unlawful practices are tarnishing the reputation of the state’s Transport Department and its minister.

In light of the situation, passengers have demanded immediate intervention by the Transport Department. They warn that without swift action, the ongoing disputes could escalate into major untoward incidents at any time.
