Agartala, 29th July 2024: In a shocking incident, fraudsters hacked the bank account of a retired police sub-inspector, Chittaranjan Ghosh, and siphoned off approximately Rs 1.2 lakh. Ghosh, a resident of Patunagar area in the suburbs of Agartala city, found the theft after noticing suspicious activity on his mobile phone.
Ghosh, who had a balance of around Rs 4 lakh in his account, became wary due to continuous messages on his phone over the past few days. On Sunday, he visited a local ATM to withdraw Rs 1,000 and was alarmed to find his account balance reduced to Rs 3 lakh.
Seeking clarification, Ghosh visited the State Bank of India (SBI) branch at Gandhigram on Monday afternoon. Bank officials confirmed that the money had been withdrawn from his account. Subsequently, he approached the SBI branch inside the BSF camp, where he was advised to file a formal complaint.
Following the bank’s instructions, Ghosh submitted a written complaint and reported the incident to the local police station. The case was then referred to the cybercrime unit, which assured Ghosh that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
Speaking to the media, the retired police officer expressed his distress over the incident and urged others to remain vigilant against such cyber frauds. “I never imagined that I would fall victim to such a scam. I hope the authorities will catch the culprits soon,” Ghosh stated.
The cybercrime unit has launched an investigation into the matter, and further updates are awaited. This incident highlights the growing menace of cyber fraud and the need for enhanced security measures to protect citizens’ financial assets.
