Agartala, 14th July 2026 : Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag on Tuesday said that reducing road accidents continues to be the primary focus of the Traffic Department, with a coordinated approach helping the state achieve a decline in accident cases.
Speaking to the media during a free eye check-up camp organised by the Tripura Traffic Department, the DGP informed that road accidents in the state decreased from 578 in 2024 to 527 in 2025.
He attributed the improvement to the joint efforts of various departments and stakeholders under the “Four Es” strategy — Education, Enforcement, Emergency Care and Engineering — aimed at strengthening road safety measures.
“The main objective of the Traffic Department is to bring down road accident numbers. Through the Four Es approach, different agencies are working together, and the results are encouraging,” DGP Anurag said.
Highlighting another road safety initiative, the DGP said the Traffic Police, along with the Community Policing programme ‘Prayas’, has launched a free eye screening drive for commercial vehicle drivers. Drivers who require spectacles or vision-related assistance will be provided lenses free of cost.
He noted that many professional drivers often struggle to visit hospitals due to busy schedules, while some cannot afford treatment expenses. The initiative has been designed to address these challenges and improve road safety.
Nearly 1,000 commercial drivers took part in Tuesday’s eye check-up camp. The DGP stressed that ensuring proper eyesight among drivers is a crucial step towards preventing accidents and creating safer roads across Tripura.
