Agartala, 18th February 2024: Agartala is to achieve a significant medical breakthrough as the inaugural renal transplant (kidney transplant) at the Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital is on the verge of inauguration.

Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, Deputy Superintendent of GB Pant Hospital, highlighted the meticulous preparations carried out by a dedicated team, shedding light on the groundbreaking development. He said that a specialized team from Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital underwent an intensive seven-day training program at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Manipur.

“This marks the initiation of renal transplant surgery in Tripura. Our team, comprising nephrologists, neurologists, psychological counselors, nursing officers, and doctors, received comprehensive training at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Manipur. They observed two surgeries, underwent hands-on training, and addressed all necessary paperwork. The training has been successfully completed,” he told reporters.

Dr. Kanak further elaborated on the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney diseases in Tripura, attributing hypertension and diabetes as the primary culprits.

“Two patients in our state have been identified for the transplant. However, we are finalizing the infrastructure. A team from Shija has visited and will return to rectify any deficiencies and loopholes. The first operation will be followed by a three-month waiting period before subsequent surgeries. This phased approach aims to raise public awareness. Chronic kidney disease, fueled by hypertension and diabetes, is a pressing concern in Tripura. This endeavor is a shared vision of AGMC and the state government, and we are diligently working towards it. It marks the first occurrence of such a procedure in Tripura, and we remain optimistic about a successful outcome,” he added.
