Agartala, 9th June 2025: Widespread violence against minority communities during Eid-ul-Azha has triggered a wave of public outrage and political backlash across Tripura. Reports of attacks on homes, physical assaults during religious rituals, and targeted vandalism have raised serious concerns about the state’s law and order situation.
In a particularly shocking incident in Udaipur, a Muslim man was publicly assaulted and had his beard forcibly removed, sparking widespread condemnation. Locals claim that several minority households were attacked in broad daylight, with little or no police intervention.
In response to the escalating violence, the Congress Party staged a protest in front of the Sonamura police station, demanding immediate accountability from the state administration. The demonstration was led by District Congress President Dipak Chakraborty, who condemned the growing attacks on minority communities and political leaders. “The silence of the government is unacceptable. Justice must be served without delay,” he said. The protest gained further momentum as it was revealed that senior Congress leaders, including MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Pradesh President Asish Kumar Saha were also targeted during the unrest intensifying the political outcry.
Despite the escalating crisis, the Chief Minister has yet to issue a statement, a silence that opposition leaders and civil society members have strongly criticized. “The administration’s inaction speaks volumes. How can such atrocities happen in a secular state without consequences?” questioned Ajit Das, Dharmanagar District Congress President during a protest.
Congress youth leader Shahjahan Islam, who had condemned the attacks on social media, faced retaliation when his home in Agartala’s Shantipara area was vandalized and his family members assaulted. In protest, the Dharmanagar District Congress organized a demonstration on Monday afternoon, with leaders wearing black badges and demanding immediate arrests.
“We are deeply shocked by the brutality. This is no longer just an attack on one community but on the very soul of democracy,” said Chayan Bhattacharya, Pradesh Congress Secretary. Youth Congress leader Jahangir Hossain and Mahila Congress District President Manasi Malakar also joined the protest, calling for exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
In Udaipur, the Gomati District Congress staged a protest march from the Jamtala Congress office to Radha Kishore Pur police station, denouncing the attack on Islam and other Congress leaders. “These incidents are politically motivated. Violence erupted after our leader voiced concerns about the Chief Minister’s silence,” said Titon Pal, Gomati District Congress President.
According to party sources, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha were attacked with bricks and verbally abused while visiting the affected area late Sunday night. Elderly parents and the wife of Shahjahan Islam were also reportedly injured in the assaults.
Congress has warned of intensified state-wide protests if justice is delayed. “We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice,” declared Ashish Kumar Saha. The party has demanded immediate government intervention to restore public confidence and ensure the protection of minority communities.
