Agartala, 21st May 2024 : In a tragic incident that took place at Pratapgarh area of the capital city, a 51-year-old tea seller named Sukhen Das lost his life after an altercation with a customer. The accused identified as Pujan Sarkar allegedly killed Das for refusing to open his closed shop and provide cigarettes.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation began on May 16 when Pujan Sarkar visited Sukhen Das’s tea stall. After consuming tea, Pujan claimed he had no money to pay. The situation escalated further on May 17 when Pujan, while passing by the shop demanded cigarettes. Sukhen Das explained that the shop was closed and couldn’t accommodate the request.
Tragically on May 18, as Sukhen Das was reopening his shop, Pujan attacked him from behind, striking him on the head with a brick. The tea seller sustained serious injuries and was rushed to GB Hospital by a rickshaw driver. Despite medical efforts, Sukhen Das succumbed to his injuries on Monday afternoon.
Sukhen Das’s wife Iti Das, expressed her grief and shock. She revealed that her husband was a heart patient who had undergone surgery. The family relied on his tea-selling business to cover their expenses, including their daughters’ education and medical bills.
The incident has left the community in shock, and emotions ran high at GBP Hospital where the grieving family gathered. Demanding justice, the family called for strict punishment for Pujan Sarkar. The police promptly arrested the accused, and he is currently in custody at the East Agartala police station.
