Agartala, 12th April 2025: Tripura witnessed a grim morning as three separate incidents—an alleged murder, a suspected drug-related death, and a suicide—have plunged different parts of the state into mourning and shock.
In a shocking discovery early Saturday morning, the body of a woman was recovered from a paddy field in Mali Para of Holakhet village, under the Udaipur subdivision. Locals spotted the woman, later identified as 47-year-old Shibani Das, lying in a pool of blood at around 7 AM and immediately informed the authorities. A police team led by Gomati district’s Additional Superintendent of Police Souvik De, along with OC Babul Das of Radhakishorepur police station, forensic experts, and a dog squad, reached the scene soon after.
According to police, Shibani’s face bore visible injury marks. Her body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The deceased, a mother of three, had been living at her father’s house following a strained second marriage. Her relatives alleged foul play, citing a recent altercation with her husband. While no official complaint has yet been lodged by the family, police have initiated a suo motu investigation.
In another disturbing case, the body of a young man was found beneath the Jawahar Bridge in the Battala area on the same morning. Police suspect that the man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, may have died from a drug overdose, as drug paraphernalia was discovered nearby. A voter ID card recovered from the scene bore the name “Swapan Das,” allegedly a resident of Teliamura, though this has not yet been verified. The body has been sent for autopsy, and investigations are underway to establish the man’s identity and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Meanwhile, in a heartbreaking incident near the Jirania railway station, a TSR jawan from the 11th Battalion, Babul Debnath, ended his life by jumping in front of a train. The incident occurred early satuday morning. Babul had reportedly been battling mental health issues and personal turmoil stemming from unresolved familial disputes, even after a second marriage. Family members claimed that he had been living separately, while his mother accused his daughter-in-law of financial exploitation. However, his wife maintained that Babul had long been suffering from both physical and psychological ailments, leading to a longstanding estrangement.
Police from the Jirania station have taken up the case and are probing the exact reasons behind the jawan’s tragic death.
