Agartala, 31st May 2025: The biennial general conference of the Tripura Journalists Union (TJU) State Committee was held on Saturday at the Agartala Press Club with notable participation from political leaders and veteran journalists. The event commenced at 11 am with Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee inaugurating the ceremony and Labour minister Tinku Roy attending as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, MP Rajib Bhattacharjee emphasized the need for government intervention in addressing the challenges faced by journalists, particularly the pressing issue of housing. “I will discuss with the state government to take appropriate measures for the welfare of journalists, especially to resolve the housing crisis,” he said.
Speaking at the conference, Minister Tinku Roy highlighted the state government’s commitment to the welfare of journalists. “The government has taken several initiatives for the development of the journalist community. However, there is a pressing need for a dedicated residential complex for journalists in Agartala, and I strongly emphasize on this matter,” Roy stated.
Calling for responsible journalism, he added, “Media is the fourth pillar of democracy. Journalists play a vital role in shaping society, and constructive criticism of the government’s work is essential for democratic progress.”
Roy also stressed the importance of ethics and responsibility in journalism. “I extend my heartfelt greetings and respect to every journalist devoted to this noble profession,” he said.
The conference was presided over by TJU President Pranab Sarkar, while Sheshadri Dasgupta moderated the proceedings. During the second session, Secretary General Alok Ghosh presented the editorial report, which was subsequently discussed by members including Anupam Bhattacharya, Jamal Uddin, Udayan Chowdhury, Snehashish Chakraborty, Chitra Roy, Prabir Shil, Jakir Hossain, Bandhan Das, Ramakanta Debnath, Syed Sajjad Ali, and Gautam Chakraborty. The participants proposed several suggestions on issues concerning journalists’ rights and organizational affairs.
In the third session, a 23-member state committee for the years 2025–2027 was unanimously formed. The newly constituted committee includes Syed Sajjad Ali as President, Pranab Sarkar as Executive President and Alok Ghosh as Secretary General. Chitra Roy, Jamal Uddin, Sourajit Pal and Dilip Datta have been appointed Vice Presidents, while Santosh Gope will serve as Assistant General Secretary. The other secretaries are Abhishek Dey, Ranjan Roy, Abhishek Saha and Samaresh Dey. Chinmoy Chowdhury has been named Treasurer, with Shyamal Dey as Co-Treasurer. Executive Members include Suprabhat Debnath, Ranjit Debbarma, Sandeep Biswas, Abhijit Nath, Chandana Bhadra, Jahar Roy and Indrani Dey. Sanjib Deb and Pradip Kumar Saha have been inducted into the advisory board.
District co-opted members include Mintu Gupta and Biswajit Saha (North District), Snehashish Chakraborty and Bandhan Das (South District), Gopesh Roy and Shekhar Bhattacharya (Khowai), Udayan Chowdhury and Mahbub Alam (Sepahijala), Dilip Datta and Gautam Shil (Gomati), Chitra Roy and Suprabhat Debnath (West), Manik Debnath (Dhalai) and Anupam Bhattacharya (Unakoti).
During the program, Dr. Joy Chakraborty and Anindita Chakraborty, patrons and heads of Mayfair were felicitated for their contributions. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Secretary General Alok Ghosh, who expressed gratitude to the outgoing committee, the newly elected members, and all participants who contributed to the successful organization of the conference.
