Agartala, 31st May 2025:  A workshop was organized at IMA House in Agartala today to mark World No Tobacco Day, emphasizing the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for a tobacco-free lifestyle. The event was hosted by the District Health Family Welfare Association and witnessed the participation of key dignitaries, including Paschim Tripura Zilla Parishad acting Sabhadipati Biswajit Shil, Corporator Ratna Datta, doctors and ASHA workers.

Inaugurating the workshop with a ceremonial lamp-lighting, Biswajit Shil highlighted the significance of World No Tobacco Day observed annually on May 31 to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco consumption. He recalled that the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated this observance in 1987 and since 1988, the day has been dedicated to encouraging individuals worldwide to quit tobacco.

Speakers at the event underscored the severe health consequences of tobacco use, linking it to diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Experts also stressed that nicotine, the addictive component in tobacco, makes quitting especially challenging. They warned about the harmful effects of smoking, which exposes individuals to carcinogenic substances like nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar, increasing risks for cancers of the lungs, colon, liver, and bladder.

The workshop aimed to empower individuals with knowledge and resources to combat tobacco addiction and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
