Agartala, 10th June 2025: The Pradesh Youth Congress today submitted a memorandum to the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), alleging that a section of ruling BJP workers has threatened minority families residing in the Masjid Patti area, pressuring them to vacate their homes.
Pradesh Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha stated that the Youth Congress is deeply concerned over an incident that occurred on the night of June 8, around 10:30 PM, when miscreants allegedly affiliated with the ruling BJP attacked the residence of Youth Congress Vice President Md Shahjahan Islam at Masjid Patti in Shantipara, Agartala, following a Facebook Live. The attackers reportedly vandalized his house and destroyed valuable furniture.
“Indecent behavior was also committed against the female members of the family,” he alleged. “Instead of arresting the attackers, police from the East Agartala Police Station arrested Shahjahan’s elderly father and brother—both of whom have no connection to the incident. Shockingly, the court has remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody.”
Since the incident, BJP workers have allegedly been conspiring to evict Shahjahan from his residence. “Not only that, they have also issued threats to other members of the minority community living in the area, warning them to leave,” Saha claimed.
He further alleged that BJP-backed individuals are exerting pressure on Shahjahan’s elderly mother, his wife, and their nine-month-old son to vacate the premises. According to the Youth Congress, the attackers gave an ultimatum: if Shahjahan’s family does not leave the house by 4 PM today, they will bulldoze the property and kill them.
“The Pradesh Youth Congress believes that the arrest of Shahjahan’s father and brother, the threats to evict his family, and the intimidation of the minority community in Shantipara are grave violations of human rights. In light of these circumstances, we have approached the Human Rights Commission, demanding immediate protection for Shahjahan’s family and the broader minority community in the area,” Saha added.
