Bengal: Suvendu urges prez to withdraw medal awarded to Kolkata top cop

Date:

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu urging her to either withdraw or forfeit the two prestigious medals conferred upon Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.

Adhikari, a prominent BJP leader of the state, accused Goyal of tampering with the evidence at the site of the alleged rape-murder of a lady medic, whose body was found in her workplace the RG Kar Medical Collge and Hospital on August 9.

” I have written a letter to President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu Ji requesting her to withdraw/forfeit the prestigious President’s Police Medal and Police Medal conferred upon Shri Vineet Goyal …. presently Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, in connection with his reprehensible, deplorable and shameful conduct during the investigation into the rape and murder of the resident doctor of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata,” Adhikari said on his X handle.

The Nandigram BJP MLA alleged that Goyal’s complicity in the “destruction of material evidence” and “deliberate inaction” during the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of 14 August has been well documented in the media.”

“His brazen attempts to sabotage the investigation into what is possibly the most heinous and sensitive crime in the country today to pander to the whims of the political executive of the state, with an intent to camouflage the financial and moral racket running in the health sector in West Bengal, makes him unworthy of retaining such awards,” said Adhikari, who is spearheading BJP’s protest in the medic murder case.

“His actions have tarnished the redoubtable reputation of the Kolkata Police built assiduously over 168 years and brought shame to West Bengal Police. His activities to shield certain influential individuals have further aggravated the already precarious law and order situation in West Bengal.

“He has brought great shame to the state and the nation and the state is on the boil with the civil society perceiving him as an embodiment of all that is wrong in the state of West Bengal,” said the BJP leader. who has written a similar letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, which has been spearheading a cease work by medics since August 9 in all government hospitals across the state, has called for Goyal’s resignation accusing him of tampering with the evidence in the rape-murder incident and failing to stop the vandalism in the hospital on August 14.

The medics blocked the busy rioad near the city police headquarters Lalbazar for over 24 hours recently and submitted a memorandum to him seeking his resignation. They also presented him a symbolic backbone made of plastic during the meeting at his chamber. UNI PC SSP
