Syrian Embassy in Washington to open on Monday: Reports

Date:

The Syrian embassy in Washington will open on Monday, the Syrian armed opposition’s channel Syria TV reported, citing sources.

In March 2014, the United States suspended diplomatic relations with Syria and the work of the Syrian embassy and consulates in the country.

On Sunday, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the United Kingdom had established diplomatic contact with Syria’s armed opposition, despite its leading group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), still being considered as a terrorist organisation.

Syria’s armed opposition captured the Syrian capital of Damascus on December 8.

Russian officials have said that Assad stepped down as president after holding negotiations with participants in the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum. Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by HTS and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister on December 10.
