Agartala, 14th August 2025: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a show-cause notice to the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT), proposing to delist it from the roster of registered political parties under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
According to the ECI, the primary purpose of registering an association as a political party under Section 29A is to participate in elections to the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and in by-elections conducted under the Act. However, official records show that the INPT has not fielded a single candidate in any such election over the past six years, since 2019.
The Commission stated that, given this prolonged inactivity, it is “self-evident” that the party has ceased to function for the purposes envisaged under Section 29A. Acting under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 29A of the Act, the ECI has proposed delisting the INPT from its registry of political parties.
Before taking final action, the ECI has given the INPT an opportunity to present its case. The party has been asked to submit a written representation, supported by an affidavit from its President or General Secretary along with relevant documents, by the forenoon of August 28, 2025.
A hearing has also been scheduled for 3:00 pm on the same day at the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Tripura, Agartala. The Commission has made it clear that the hearing must be attended by the President, General Secretary, or Head of the Party.
“If no reply is received by the aforesaid date, it will be presumed that the party has nothing to say in the matter and appropriate action will be taken without further communication,” the ECI warned.
