Neglected government quarters in Unakoti turn into “Haunted House,” residents demand urgent action

Agartala, 29th August 2025:   A cluster of government quarters in East Govindpur, Unakoti district, has become a symbol of bureaucratic neglect, with residents likening their living conditions to that of a “haunted bungalow.” Despite repeated complaints and deteriorating infrastructure, the quarters—under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD)—have reportedly not seen any repairs in over 25 years.

In stark contrast, quarters adjacent to the department’s main office receive regular maintenance and annual repainting, raising questions about selective upkeep and administrative priorities.

Subhash Ranjan Banik, a long-time resident and government employee, expressed deep frustration over the state of his assigned accommodation. “The quarters are uninhabitable, yet rent is deducted every month. I’ve submitted written complaints multiple times, but no one listens,” he said. Banik, who moved into the quarters 12 years ago, claims not a single repair has been carried out since.

The situation becomes dire during the monsoon, with waterlogging at the entrance and damp interiors leading to furniture damage and pest infestations. Banik recounted a terrifying incident where a snake slithered onto his body while he was asleep, leaving his family in a state of psychological distress. “Snakes enter daily. The broken main gate has already led to three bicycle thefts,” he added.

Banik, who has suffered two strokes, says the stress of living in such conditions has taken a toll on his physical and mental health. “If something tragic happens, who will be held responsible?” he asked, highlighting the lack of accountability from the department.

Local residents have also voiced concerns over the disparity in maintenance standards. “Why are quarters near the main office regularly renovated, while others are left to rot?” one resident questioned.

With the quarters now resembling a ghostly ruin, Banik has formally requested either immediate relocation for his family or urgent repairs to make the premises livable. So far, the department has remained silent.
