Agartala, 19th November 2025: The Cardiology Department of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital has achieved a historic milestone by successfully performing Tripura’s first-ever Percutaneous Transluminal Septal Myocardial Ablation (PTSMA), a highly advanced cardiac procedure used in the treatment of Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM).
The breakthrough procedure was carried out on a 46-year-old patient suffering from severe HOCM and long-standing recurrent chest pain. HOCM, a genetic heart disorder, causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, obstructing blood flow and potentially leading to life-threatening complications such as arrhythmias, heart failure and sudden cardiac death.
The PTSMA treatment involves injecting medical alcohol into a targeted artery that supplies blood to the thickened portion of the heart muscle, thereby reducing the obstruction and improving blood flow. According to hospital sources, the patient has shown remarkable improvement and is recovering rapidly.
Until now, patients requiring this procedure had to travel outside Tripura, resulting in significant financial and emotional strain. The successful performance of PTSMA at AGMC & GBP Hospital marks a turning point in the state’s healthcare capabilities and places the hospital among the select centres in eastern India equipped to carry out such highly complex interventional cardiology procedures.
Doctors from the Cardiology Department described the achievement as a “turning point” in their mission to provide world-class cardiovascular services to the people of Tripura. They also emphasised the importance of early diagnosis and awareness, noting that many HOCM patients remain undiagnosed due to lack of knowledge about the condition.
The pioneering medical team behind this accomplishment includes Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi, Assistant Professor, Consultant Cardiologist and Head of Department (in-charge), Dr. Rakesh Das, Consultant Cardiologist, along with junior doctors Dr. Manna Bhattacharya, Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anvesha Debnath, Dr. Supratim Acharya, Dr. Bulti Namah Das and Dr. Angela Debbarma.
They were supported by Cathlab nurses Debabrata Debnath, Prankrishna Deb, Manash Dutt and Titiksha Majumdar, Echo Technician Kishan Roy, and Cathtech Sanjay Ghosh.
Importantly, the entire procedure was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, making advanced cardiac treatment accessible to the public.
The Department of Health and Family Welfare expressed pride in this achievement, noting that it reflects Tripura’s growing medical infrastructure and the commitment of its healthcare professionals. With this milestone, AGMC & GBP Hospital has set a new benchmark in cardiac care, offering renewed hope and improved quality of life to patients suffering from complex heart conditions.
This landmark achievement is being hailed as a proud moment for the people of Tripura, marking a significant leap forward in the state’s healthcare capabilities.
