Agartala, 13th February 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has announced that it will organise a “Lok Bhavan Abhiyan” on February 17, alleging that the Centre has discontinued the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and replaced it with a new programme.
Addressing reporters, TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha claimed that the Union Government has introduced a scheme titled VB GRAMG, offering 125 days of mandays, in place of MGNREGA. He described the move as misleading and termed the new initiative a “jumla,” alleging that it undermines a long-standing rural employment framework associated with Mahatma Gandhi’s name.
Saha stated that the February 17 programme in Tripura will be part of a broader nationwide campaign aimed at safeguarding the rural employment guarantee scheme. According to him, similar demonstrations have already been conducted in other states.
In Tripura, the protest is expected to see participation from Congress leaders, grassroots workers, and beneficiaries from different panchayats who depend on MGNREGA for livelihood support.
The Congress leadership has reiterated that the rural job guarantee scheme remains vital for ensuring income security in villages and has urged supporters and members of the public to join the rally in large numbers to press for its continuation.
