Agartala, 30th June 2026: The sudden closure of several private chambers of doctors in Agartala has reportedly led to a significant increase in patient turnout at GB Hospital, creating severe overcrowding, particularly in the Gynecology Department.
Patients and their families have complained of long waiting hours and inadequate facilities at the state’s premier referral hospital. On Tuesday, large crowds were witnessed in the gynecology department, where many patients had reportedly been waiting since early morning to consult doctors.
Several pregnant women reportedly fell ill while waiting in the heat, as the department lacked adequate cooling facilities and sufficient electric fans. Patients arriving from distant areas expressed frustration over the prolonged delays.
One woman said she had been standing in line since 9:30 a.m. but had made little progress toward receiving medical attention. She added that she had visited the hospital previously but had never experienced such severe congestion.
Since Sunday, several private practitioners in Agartala have reportedly stopped seeing patients without any formal announcement. Although their clinic signboards remain displayed, patient services have remained suspended.
Speculation has emerged that the situation may be linked to the government’s reported decision to restrict private practice by doctors and faculty members attached to GB Hospital and AGMC. However, no official statement has yet been issued regarding the matter.
