Agartala Railway Police thwart cross-border movement; Nine detained including 8 Bangladeshis

Agartala, 11th May 2024 :  The Agartala Railway Police on Saturday morning apprehended eight Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian citizen at the Badharghat railway station in Agartala. The arrests were made following confidential intelligence that indicated an attempt to exit the state of Tripura via the Bangladesh border.

Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das of the Agartala Railway Police Station disclosed that actionable intelligence had been received about the potential departure of several Bangladeshi nationals aboard the Kanchanjunga Express. In response, the railway police established a covert operation at the station. Upon their arrival, the Bangladeshi individuals were promptly detained by the authorities, resulting in a total of nine arrests, including one Indian national.

The individuals arrested are Sentu Kumar Deb, aged 59, residing in Madhya Boxanagar, Paschimpara under Sepahijala district in Tripura; Taniya Hasan Shaikh, aged 26, from Manirampur village under Jashore district in Bangladesh; Sathi Khatun, aged 35, hailing from Diyapara Adarsha village under Jashore district in Bangladesh; Sumi Shaikh, aged 28, from Naokhola village under Sariatpur district in Bangladesh; Rupa Shaikh, aged 26, residing in Fuliya village under Comilla district in Bangladesh; Rezwan Shaikh, aged 19, from Haralia village under Norail district in Bangladesh; Beauty Khatun, also known as Tumpa, aged 27, from Sakharghati village under Jashore district in Bangladesh; Supiya Shaikh, aged 36, from Laskarpara village under Norail district in Bangladesh; and Majeda Biswas, also known as Pinki, aged 31, from Baroihati village under Satkhira district in Bangladesh.

During initial questioning, the detainees revealed intentions to travel to Pune and Mumbai for undisclosed reasons. The ongoing interrogation seeks to determine the underlying motives behind their attempted departure. Legal proceedings have been initiated, with the police securing a remand and presenting the individuals before the court. The investigation continues to unravel whether this incident is a case of human trafficking or a quest for employment opportunities outside the state.
